  • The Nanjing Museum, located in the beautiful southern foothill of Zijin Mountain, was established on Mr. Cai Yuanpei’s initiatives as the Preparatory Department of the former National Central Museum in 1933, now boasting a 80-year-old glorious history. So far, the Phase II Expansion Project of Nanjing Museum has been completed with a floor area of 85,000 square meters and the layout of “six halls and six institutes in one museum.”

The layout of “six halls in one museum” is designed to build a top-class “comprehensive museum” based on the antique collections of Nanjing Museum. Besides the original Historical and Art halls, other four newly-built halls are the Special Exhibition Hall, Digital Hall, Republic of China Hall and Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall.

The Historical Hall permanently offers the exhibition of “Ancient Civilization in Jiangsu” to illustrate the history of Jiangsu with a great number of historical relics and specimens.

The Special Exhibition Hall comprises ten exhibition rooms to hold temporary or special exhibitions in a bid to show the blending of different cultures and arts. Currently, it is presenting exhibitions of “National Treasure,” “Golden China,” “Great Achievements in Prosperous Times,” “Layout of the Palace in the Qing Dynasty” and “Accuracy and Gorgeousness.”

The Art Hall is composed of eight exhibition rooms classified into the ancient painting, ancient calligraphy, ancient statue and other special themes. Additionally, some special exhibition rooms are established in honor of renowned artists, including the Chinese painting master Fu Baoshi, the Chinese realistic painting master Chen Zhifo and the oil painting master Su Tianci.

The Digital Hall includes the physical and online virtual exhibition rooms, of which the physical one showcases the ancient Chinese civilization, especially Jiangsu’s civilization, based on the human being’s sentiments and the virtual one doesn’t only restore the physical one online but also is built as a permanent “online museum” by integrating intelligence of the audience based on the Internet.

The Republic of China Hall visually displays the civilians’ life during the period of Republic of China with the Nanjing’s local civilization as its theme.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall (also known as Jiangsu Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall) doesn’t only briefly introduces the general information of intangible cultural heritage projects in Jiangsu but also dynamically exhibits the bustling folk-custom activities, traditional handicraft and traditional oral performances.
